4. Item # GASEF 004 Color Wheel Wall Chart Poster

  • Price: $6.00
  • ***NEW!!***Consists of 1 EA 18 x 39 inch color glossy wall chart poster.

This large colorful poster will provide a useful reference for classroom discussions of color mixing. The chart provides a side-by side comparison of additive (light) color mixing (on the left-hand side) with subtractive (pigment) color mixing (on the right hand side), so the relationship can be easily seen. The top section of the chart shows the color wheels and primary colors for both additive and subtractive colors. The middle section of the chart demonstrates the science of adding different primary colors of light and pigment, and shows how the color wheel can be used to predict the resultant colors. The bottom section of the chart describes complementary colors of light and pigment, again, in reference to the color wheel.

Cut this sheet into 8 horizontal color strips: one each for R, G, B, C, M, Y, and two for black. Overlap and slide the CMYK strips to generate all of the colors that can be generated by a typical color printer. Compare the large range of colors that can be produced using CMY strips to the few colors that can be produced using RYB strips or RGB strips.

Each gradient strip shows a single hue, with different values of saturation. The more colored rectangles have higher saturation than the lighter colored rectangles. Each black gradient strip rectangle has a different value or lightness. The value or lightness of any colored rectangle can be changed by placing it on a black rectangle. So these strips are also useful for discussing the color model of hue, saturation, and lightness.

13. Item # GASEF 013 Light Bulb Wire Kit

  • Price: $5.00
  • 10 EA. 20-cm length of 0.003 inch diameter Kanthal AF wire
  • 2 EA. 20-cm length of 0.010 inch diameter Kanthal AF wire
  • 2 EA. 20-cm length of 0.020 inch diameter copper wire
  • These materials are to be used for Experiment 6: Light Bulb Fabrication" in the module: "Seeing the Light: The Physics and Materials Science of the Incandescent Light Bulb." In this experiment, students build a simple light bulb that can operate in air. First, you need a Variac transformer or dc power supply or batteries. Connect the copper leads from the Variac to the 0.010 inch diameter Kanthal AF leads by twisting the ends together. Then connect the 0.010 inch diamter Kanthal AF wires (which simulate the lead wires in a light bulb) to the 0.003 inch diameter Kanthal AF wire (which simulates the tungsten filament in the light bulb) by twisting the ends together. By increasing the Variac voltage, the current in the 0.003 inch Kanthal AF filament can be increased to resistively heat the filament and cause it to glow. For a filament about 20 cm long, a voltage of about 40 V is required. This can be done in air because the Kanthal AF wire is oxidation resistant at high temperatures. Caution: This experiment should be done by the teacher or under close supervision because the exposed wires are at potentially dangerous voltages and currents.

15. Item # GASEF 015 Addenda to "The Line of Resistance" module

  • Price: $3.00
  • The addenda contain additional experiments and creative dramas that complement the original unit now sold by the The Institute for Chemical Education at the University of Wisconsin. There are a new series of experiments and problems on lightning safety that also use a graphite pencil and a piezoelectric sparker. In a new section on superconductors, students measure electrical losses in "superconducting" and normal magnets that they make using copper wire and the graphite pencil. They also fabricate a superconducting magnet with a "persistent switch." A creative drama and assessment about electrical conduction by electrons and holes extends the creative dramas described in the original module.

16. Item # GASEF 016 "Light Matters" poster

  • Price: $6.00
  • This unique 17 x 11 inch color poster describes the interaction of light with matter using a picture of the natural phenomenon, a diagram showing the essential physics, and a written description. The poster in divided into three sections. The first section describes the scattering of light by small particles, which is responsible for the color of the sky as well as sunsets. The second section presents examples of the interaction of light with bulk matter, where the light can be reflected, transmitted, or absorbed. Here, the phenomena of specular and diffuse reflection, the dispersion of light by a prism and the formation of a rainbow, and the color of water and leaves are lucidly discussed. The third section describes the emission of light, using a computer monitor and the color of hot objects as examples. The poster includes references for additional information and a section on details and clarifications.
