TRIGA™ (Training, Research, and Isotope Production General Atomics) is the most widely used non-power Test, Research and Training Reactors [TRTR] in the world
- Best video explanation and demonstration of TRIGA is on the K-State Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering site.
- Neutron Radiography [N-Ray] or Neutron Computed Tomography using a General Atomics TRIGA reactor at the McClellan Nuclear Research Center [MNRC] at UC Davis at McClellan Park, Sacramento-McClellan airport, KMCC, which was McClellan AFB.
- The nuclear research reactor at MNRC was commissioned under the United States Air Force in 1990, making it one of the newest research reactors in the US. It is the highest power TRIGA™ reactor in the United States, rated at 2 MW in steady state with the capability to pulse to approximately 400 MW for 30 msec. … The reactor was built to support the MNRC unique radiography bays which include the two largest neutron radiography bays in the world.
- NOTE: There was a lot of commercial aviation interest in this facility when McClellan AFB closed in 2000. The Military was using this facility to scan F-16 sized aircraft and F-111 wings to determine if there was airframe cracks or corrosion without removing the skin. If the base had made the facility large enough to accommodate 737 sized aircraft, there would have been an enormous amount of commercial business after the base closed. This was a huge time saver for the Military.
- Fusion: As a world leader in fusion energy research, GA scientists and engineers are engaged in developing both magnetic and inertial confinement fusion as a safe, clean and virtually unlimited energy source for the future.
